Welcome to 2nd Term!

Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful Fall Break. I want to take a minute and talk about what second quarter traditionally looks like. This is the quarter when we tend to see grades drop. If your student is still having a tough time transitioning to junior high, please let me know. We have many tools to help students be successful- sometimes they just need a reminder. Now is a great time to review whatever goals you have set with them. If you didn’t have a chance to do that prior to school starting, I encourage you to start now. When our students have a goal in sight, they tend to be more focused.
House Madness Volunteer Meeting- October 24th- Please join us at 7 pm in the library to learn more about how you can be part of this amazing program. We need parents to make it happen!
House Parent Information Meeting- October 29th- If you are interested in becoming a house parent and learning about what it entails, please join us. We will meet as a group and then give you time to talk with your House Leader Teacher. 2:30 pm in the library.
Halloween- October 31- Our students met the required passing rate to be able to wear costumes this Halloween (over 90% of our students passed all of their classes). Here are costume regulations:

§   The School Dress Code and the Student Code of Conduct still applies even though costumes are allowed.

§   Students must come to school already dressed for the day.

§   Inappropriately dressed students will be sent to the office to call home for a change of clothing.

§   Costumes should not be revealing. No bare shoulders, bare midriffs, bare legs above the knee.

§   No costumes degrading racial, ethnic, or religious groups.

§   Leotards and tights are not to be worn alone.

§   No masks of any kind and Full-face make up is not allowed.

§   Hats are acceptable if they are part of the costume and can be removed for class and are not a problem in the halls.

§   Costumes should not impair the students’ ability to function in class, move through the halls, eat lunch, or cross the street.

§   Props or costume parts should not obstruct other students or be a distraction in class.

§   Remove any sharp edges or points from costumes or props before coming to school.

§   No weapons or facsimile of weapons are allowed.

§   Makeup and colored hair are fine as long as they are applied at home. No colored sprays will be allowed in the school.

Jimmy John’s Spirit Lunch- November 1- PTSA is doing a spirit lunch on November 1. The order form is HERE. The cost is $6 for a sandwich and chips. All orders and money must be turned in by Monday, October 29th.
Parent/Teacher Conference and Continuing the Conversation- November 15- We had a great turnout for our parent volunteer meeting and intro to LJHS in August. We would like to continue the conversation with you. We want to know what we’re doing well and how you would like to see us improve. Whether you have specific ideas or just things you would like to see changed, please join us on November 15 in the media center during our Parent/Teacher Conference at 6:00pm. We know that with your help we can continue to serve our students better and build the connections they need to be successful.
Sincerely,
Kevin Thomas
Principal

Principal’s Note, Week of October 15th

Parents and Guardians,
With the changing of the leaves excitement grows for the other changes taking place. We are nearing the end of our 1st term of school. 2nd term comes soon. Historically, 2nd term is the most difficult for our students. Please remind them to build on the good habits they are beginning to develop.
Reflections– Our PTSA is excited to see all the entries this year. The theme is Heroes Around Me. Please encourage your students to participate. All entries should be turned into the library by Tuesday, October 23rd. This gives them time to work on them over Fall Break.
End of term- Wednesday, October 17th is the end of the first term! Please check Skyward and follow up with your students. Encourage them to turn in missing assignments. If you have questions or concerns please email [email protected].
Fall Break- There is no school for students from October 18th-22nd. Students return on Tuesday, October 23rd to begin the second term.
Wish you a safe and fantastic Fall Break.

Week 4-Principal Message

The year is flying by and we are closing in on our first midterm. Students are doing well. We just had our first parent/teacher conference. If you were unable to attend and would like to contact teachers please email them or call the school. We want to ensure that your questions are answered and your student is receiving the help he/she needs.

Speaking of help: Every Wednesday we run a late bus so students can stay after and work on assignments with teachers. The late bus leaves the school at 4:00pm and drops students off in areas throughout the boundary. This is a great opportunity for students to catch up. Our math teachers are also available before and after school.

We have had two Fridays of Pizza with the Principal. This is an opportunity for me to meet with each student in the school in a small group as we discuss how things are going in the school. These students are amazing and I am so appreciative of the time I get to spend with them. By the end of the year I hope to meet with each student in the school.

The PTSA Spirit Lunch- Sept. 27 during lunches. For $6 you can purchase a 4″ Jimmy John’s sandwich and bag of chips for your student. This is a PTSA fundraiser to help sponsor programs like Pizza with the Principal. Please return the attached order forms to the office by Mon. Sept. 24.https://lehijr.alpineschools.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2018/09/Spirit-Lunch.pdf

I wanted to remind you also about our 5K run coming up. Our Choir and Orchestra are hosting a 5K run/walk on September 29th. The race starts at 9:00 am in front of Lehi Junior. Pre-registration is going on now. https://www.raceentry.com/races/we-are-one-run/2018/register

Finally and importantly, I would like to give you a little background about our philosophy here at Lehi Junior. We believe that we can make a positive connection with every single student in the building. (This year that is almost 1400!) In alignment with Alpine School District’s theme this year, we believe that Every One Matters. We know that this is ambitious- the idea of reaching every single student. We also know that we can’t afford to aim for anything less. Our students are living during a challenging time. There are so many outside forces and influences that we can’t control. We know that their social and emotional health has to be good for them to be able to learn. We know they need someone on their team. Please join us as we work to make sure every student has a connection, friend and adult advocate.

We recently held our parent volunteer and information meeting. There were almost 80 people in attendance! We wanted to get that information out to the parents who were unable to attend that night. Please follow this link to our parent volunteer survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf61R6OknFvkZho5F_uEhCPfEN2ZCNyILsldjpbUQUvXsB60Q/viewform
Please fill that out and submit it. You will be contacted by Stacy Bateman or Katie Shelley. We really do feel strongly about matching our volunteers with the perfect opportunity. If you’re not sure what you want to do, that’s ok. They do a great job of sharing what opportunities are available and how you can make a difference. Maybe you have an idea that isn’t on the form- awesome! Share that with them and let’s see what we can do this year.

Career Conversations:
Twice a month our students have the opportunity to hear from a new speaker. If you would like to share your career please sign up here.

Volunteer Website:
You can check here for opportunities that are currently available.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this and please watch for our volunteer form coming soon. We are grateful for any time you can give our students. If it’s only an hour, we’ll take it. Each opportunity we have to connect adults and students makes their lives better. Thank you for connecting with us. We know we are at the beginning of our best year yet. I look forward to seeing you in the halls.

Thank you,

Kevin Thomas, Principal
Have a wonderful weekend.
